Five ways schools can cut waste this term

Small, learner-led changes add up fast. Here are five we see working in schools.

  1. Run a one-day waste audit. Learners sort and weigh a day’s rubbish. The results are always surprising — and motivating.
  2. Set up clearly labelled recycling stations beside every bin, with pictures for younger grades.
  3. Start a school compost heap for tuck-shop and garden waste, and use it in a food garden.
  4. Make it a competition. Classes compete for the cleanest grounds or the most material diverted.
  5. Appoint eco-monitors who check stations, share tips at assembly and report progress.
